Women Rout NC State, While Men Fall To Wolfpack

RALEIGH, N.C.- The 2001-02 swimming season opened with mixed results today for the University of Maryland as the women rolled to a 152-81 victory while the men's team lost 134-98 at NC State.

The Terrapin women, coming off a season in which they were ranked all year in the Top 25, opened the 2001-02 campaign in strong fashion today in Raleigh. Senior Petra Adamkova (Nachod, Czech Rep.) had an outstanding meet, leading the Terps with three victories on the day. Adamkova won both the 50-free (24.22) and the 100-free (53.72) while also swimming the second leg of the winning 400-free relay team (3:34.19).

Senior Kelly Bowman (Hauppauge, N.Y.) and sophomores Kerry Kennedy (Weston, Conn.) and Allison Mahlstedt (Houston, Texas) joined Adamkova on the winning relay. Bowman also took top honors in the 200-free (1:52.07) and the 500-free (5:01.56).

Other multiple winners for the women included junior Bridget Mallon (Arlington, Va.) in the200-fly (2:03.32) and the 400-medley relay (3:54.07) and junior Jill Martin (Orlando, Fla.) in the 200-breast (2:22.58) and the 400-medley relay (3:54.07).

Other winners for the women were sophomore Linneah Riedlinger (Greenbelt, Md.) in the 1000-free (10:22.06) and freshman Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) in the 200-IM (2:07.99).

For the men, senior Michael Malchak (Columbia, Md.) won the 1000-free (9:40.03) and senior Luis Emilio (Brasilia, Brazil) came away with top honors in the 200-breast (2:12.61). The 400-free relay team consisting of four freshmen: Mike Fried (Ambler, Pa.), Matt Benedick (College Park, Md.), Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.) and Chris Brandenberger (Stony Brook, N.Y.) won with a time of 3:16.48.

Both teams return to the pool Friday (Oct. 19) in the home opener vs. Florida State. The meet is set to begin at 6 p.m. in the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium.
