Turmoil In Danish Swimming

Oct 15, 2001

Danish swimming has been convulsed since August 26 when the majority of national team members announced they would no longer compete at international competitions such as World Cups, European and World Championships representing their country.

The main reason for their stand was lack of confidence in Sport Director/National Coach Jens Glavind. He was accused of favouritism towards Mette Jacobsen at the expense of other swimmers.

The Danish National Coaches Association (DSTS) supported the national team's position nearly unanimously, with the majority of Danish swim clubs also backing the national team.

A mediation process with a lawyer and all parties involved was attempted. Some progress was made in resolving the differences but eventually it too failed as the Danish Swimming Federation (DSLF) was unable to provide a satisfactory resolution.

On Wednesday, October 10, Sports Director/National Coach Jens Glavind and his assistant Michael Andersen handed in their resignation, followed by some members of Danish Swimming's executive.

This immediately resulted in national team swimmers to rescind their stand and return to international competitions.

On October 27 a review of the structure of Danish Swimming will get underway involing all the swim clubs. An extraordinary general meeting may results to ratify any recommendations.

Danish Swimming receives the majority of its funding from Team Denmark and indications are that this turmoil could result in a reduced level of support.
