Georgia Men and Women Get First Win of the Season at UNC

Oct 19, 2001

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Georgia swimming and diving teams returned to their winning ways Wednesday, as both the men's and women's teams defeated North Carolina at the Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill. The three-time defending NCAA champion Lady Bulldogs (1-1, 0-1 SEC) won 14 of the 16 events en route to a 175-122 victory, while the men (1-1, 0-1 SEC) downed the Tar Heels by the score of 163-137.

Senior co-captain Stefanie Williams led the Lady Bulldogs with three first-place finishes in the 50, 100 and 200-yard freestyle events. Freshman Katie Yevak also touched the wall first in three events, but her NCAA-qualifying time in the 400-yard individual medley was an exhibition. Yevak, from Emporia, Kan., also won the 100 and 200-yard butterfly races.

Ashley Roby and Julie Hardt, who both missed the Florida dual meet and the SEC East Challenge last weekend, picked up first-place finishes in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 1000-yard freestyle, respectively. Junior Maritza Correia, who finished third in the 200-yard freestyle, took top honors in the 500-yard freestyle with a winning time of 4:51.54

Sophomore Neka Mabry collected a pair of first-place finishes, touching the wall first in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events. The foursome of Mabry, Lindsay Ertter, Yevak and Correia won the 200-yard medley relay, while Mabry, Kearns, Roby and Ertter combined for a win in the 400-yard freestyle. In the diving well, freshman Brooke Bassham took first in the 1-meter springboard event with 257.55 points and placed second in the 3-meter event.

Williams, Mabry, Roby and Yevak each recorded NCAA automatic qualifying times in at least one event.

On the men's side, a pair of wins by Marc Lindsay, Andrew Mahaney and Kris Daugherty highlighted a very successful meet. Lindsay took first in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events, while Mahaney touched the wall first in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly. Daugherty tallied the most points for first-place in both the 1-meter and 3-meter springboard events.

Freshman Matt Brado took top honors in the 100-yard freestyle, while Kyle Salyards' time of 56.54 was best in the 100-yard breaststroke. Salyards was close to double victory, but he was edged at the wall by Sean Quinn by 0.10 of a second in the 200-yard breaststroke.

Sophomores Randy Lam and Brent McAuliffe won the 100-yard butterfly and the 400-yard individual medley, respectively. The Bulldogs finished second in both the 400-yard freestyle and the 200-yard medley relays.

The Lady Bulldogs will head out west for a showdown with Stanford (Oct. 24) and California (Oct. 25). Georgia topped Stanford by 2.5 points to win last year's NCAA Championships. The Golden Bears are looking for a little dual meet revenge after losing to the Lady Bulldogs in Athens last year. The men are off until a Nov. 2 dual meet at Michigan State.

Men's Final Score:
North Carolina 137
Georgia 163

Women's Final Score:
