Fast Swims At Sprint Cup

With US $ 310,000 in prize money up for grabs a small group (54) of sprint specialist competed last Saturday, Oct 2 (25 m pool).

Inge de Bruijn (NED) won the most prize money with $ 37,000 for her two individual wins in the 50 free and 50 fly. Geoff Huegill was the top male swimmer for his win in the 50 fly. Both donated $ 1,000 for a fund for a swimmer from the host club whose father died on September 11 in the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

One world best was established by the American men's 4x50 free relay with their 1:25.86 composed of Aaaron Ciarla 21.64, Neil Walker 21.26, Nate Dusing 21.54 and Jason Lezak 21.43. This time bettered a 1:26.78 by the University of Texas in March 2000. Actually there are non-recognized faster relays composed by swimmers from different countries.

A European record fell to Zoe Baker (GBR) in the 50 breaststroke with 30.78, bettering her own 30.97 from August 2001.

American records were established by Ed Moses in the 50 breaststroke with 26.92 bettering his own 26.96 from March 2000; Megan Quann in the 50 breaststroke 30.94, bettering the previous best of 31.19 by Amy Balcerzak, November 2000. The Americans also bettered both men's and women's 4x50 free. The women's time was 1:39.59 bettering the old time of 1:40.21 by the University of Arizona in March 2000.

The competition was held in East Meadow, NY, site of next month's FINA World Cup, November 27-28.
