Maryland Teams Dominate Howard And Johns Hopkins

COLLEGE PARK, Md.- The University of Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams each earned two victories today in a tri-meet vs. Howard and Johns Hopkins at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium. The men's team topped Howard 146-21 while also winning over Johns Hopkins, 118-52. The Maryland women's squad also won impressively, downing Howard 147-21 and Johns Hopkins 132-41.

The two victories for the men improve the Terps to 3-2 overall while the women's team now stands at 4-1 to open the season.

The tri-meet was made up mostly of relay events, but the Terps did have two individual winners. Both freshman Neal Rubin (Plainview, N.Y.) and sophomore Steven Vigilante (Plano, Texas) won individual events for the Terps. Rubin finished first in the 400-IM (4:11.73) while Vigilante scored a career-best (309.30) on the 1-meter diving board to finish first.

The Terrapin men also won six of the seven relay events to cruise to the easy victories.

For the women, individual winners included sophomore Linneah Riedlinger (Greenbelt, Md.) in the 500-free (5:05.63), freshman Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) in the 400-IM (4:30.20) and senior diver Nicole Shafer (Ashton, Md.) on the 1-meter board (253.11).

The women's relay teams were also dominant by also winning six of the possible seven relay events.

The Terrapins return to the pool Saturday (Nov. 3) at Ohio State in a tri-meet with the host Buckeyes and Virginia Tech. The meet is scheduled to begin at Noon.
