Deibler and Biedermann Make Their Mark
Nov 27, 2005 - Craig Lord
Steffen Deibler, with a 21.91sec victory over 50 metres freestyle, and Paul Biedermann, with a 3:41.60 win over 400m freestyle, at the national short-course championships in Essen gave Germany hope that a new generation of talent is about to break through in senior waters.
Both will be medal hopes when they compete at the European short-course championships in Trieste, Italy, next month. At the helm of the German team will be seasoned veterans such as Thomas Rupprath and Annika Melhorn, both multi-title winners in Essen.
Kamil Kasprowicz, of Hannover, took two titles in the final session in Essen, winning the 200m breaststroke in 2:11.56 and the 200m medley in 1:58.58.
Most times recorded in Essen would look good on a long-course sheet but suggest a team in transition.
