Michelle Smith-DeBruin's B sample same as A sample

May 24, 1998

Michelle Smith-DeBruin's B urine sample analysis has matched the A sample test which showed lethal amounts of alcohol. The two samples were taken in an out-of-competition test on Jan 10 at her home in Ireland. The sample was tested at an IOC approved lab in Barcelona, Spain with Smith-DeBruin's lawyer and a biochemist present.

FINA will now refer the matter to its Doping Panel, which will determine if any penalty will be imposed. The rules allow for up to a lifetime ban for a physical manipulation of a sample.

Michelle has already stated that she would appeal any charges brought formally against her in this case.

The attention will now shift to determining who and how the samples were manipulated.
