Virginia Men and Women Swim Past Georgia Tech

The Virginia men's and women's swimming and diving teams posted convincing victories over Atlantic Coast Conference opponent Georgia Tech Friday (November 12) at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center. The 10th-ranked Cavalier men won all 11 swimming events in registering a 140-97 win. The 14th-ranked Virginia women also won all 11 swimming events in a 134-100 victory over the Yellow Jackets. The Cavalier men now stand at 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the ACC, while the UVa women improve to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in the ACC.
In the women's 134-100 victory, Virginia won 11 of 13 events, including three exhibition victories late in the meet. First-year Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) won a pair of individual events for the Cavaliers, winning both the 50 (24.06) and 100 freestyle (51.71). Lewis was also a member of Virginia's first-place 200 medley relay. The team of third-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School), first-years Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive) and Anna Steenrod (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin) and Lewis turned in a time of 1:45.71 to win the race. White also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.84. Glover posted the top time in the 100 butterfly, registering a mark of 56.51.
Second-year Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville) grabbed an event victory for UVa in the 200 free. Bland clocked a season-best and pool record time of 1:49.94 to meet the NCAA provisional standard in the event. Second-year Kimi Kelly (Mount Vernon, N.Y./Ursuline School) led a Virginia sweep of the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:57.41. Third-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel) finished second in the 1000 (10:04.11) and posted the top time in the 500 free (4:55.34).
Second-year Erin Corgan (Marietta, Ga./Marist) won the 200 individual medley for Virginia, turning in a time of 2:04.91. In the 100 breaststroke, second-year Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) posted an exhibition win (1:05.18). The team of Burke, Kelly, second-year Rory Schmidt (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia), and third-year Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) concluded the meet with an exhibition victory in the 800 freestyle relay (7:38.93). The Virginia men won all 11 swimming events in its 140-97 win over the Yellow Jackets. The victory extends UVa's ACC winning streak to 27 consecutive dual meets. Fourth-year Luke Anderson (Charlottesville, Va./Bolles School) swept the 50 and 100 freestyles with two season-best and NCAA "B" times of 20.20 and 44.69, respectively. Anderson helped the Cavaliers open the meet by anchoring the winning 200 medley relay team. The team of first-year Bryan Stahl (Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands), second-year Vanja Rogulj (Zagreb, Croatia/Split), first-year Matt Targett (Victoria, Australia/Scotch College), and Anderson combined for a time of 1:32.35. Rogulj also posted an exhibition victory in the 100 breaststroke (56.54).
Third-year Fran Crippen (Conshohocken, Pa./Germantown Academy) set the pool record in winning the 1000 freestyle with a season-best time of 9:07.29. Second-year John Millen (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) touched in second with a time of 9:20.64 and he went on to win the 500 free with a time 4:31.57. Second-year Stefan Hirniak (Highland Park, N.J./Princeton Day) grabbed the top spot in the 200 free (1:41.60), while fourth-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) won the 100 fly (49.40). First-year Pat Mellors (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) posted the top time in the 200 I.M. (1:51.56), and fourth-year Bo Greenwood (Manakin, Va./Goochland) finished first in the 100 backstroke (52.51). The men concluded the meet with an exhibition victory in the 800 free relay with the team of Millen, Mellors, fourth-year Brian Harrington (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon), and Greenwood clocking a time of 6:58.02.
Georgia Tech swept the women's and men's diving competitions. Laurissa Prystaj won the women's one and three-meter diving competitions with scores of 270.07 and 283.64, respectively, while Tony Burkhardt scored 318.53 points in winning the one-meter board and 313.05 points in winning the three-meter diving competition.
Virginia returns to action on November 20 when it hosts South Carolina at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center at 1:00 p.m.
