Gator Women Notch Easy Win Against South Carolina

The University of Florida women's swimming and diving team took the fourth-straight meet against Southeastern Conference rivals the South Carolina Gamecocks, 131-111. The women's team swept eight of the 13 events and garnered four NCAA provisional qualifying times. UF now moves to 3-1 in dual meet action and 1-1 in the SEC. UF's series record against USC is now 14-0.
Starting out, Florida claimed second, third and fourth placings in the one-meter diving event. Senior Nicole Bolt (Orlando) tallied 274.65 (second), while junior Jessica Ranieri (Huntington Valley, Pa.) earned 265.88 points with her dives for a third-place showing. Maureen McGinty (Orlando) took third (230.55).
On the three-meter board, Bolt took another second-place home with her score of 287.55. Ranieri finished fourth (263.18), while McGinty again finished fifth with a dive-scoring total of 258.23.
In the pool, UF also took the gold and bronze in the 400-yard medley relay. A team of Leah Retrum (Colombus, Ind.), Mandy Huff (Gold Hill, N.C.), Rebecca Harper (Richmond, Va.) and Maureen Farrell (Northridge, Calif.) finished first with a time of 3:49.55. Behind them with a 3:51.35 clocking, the Florida 'C' team, consisting of Samantha Vanderbilt (Nashville, Tenn.), Ingrid Haiden (Cape Town, S. Africa), Colleen Healy (Cape Coral) and Natalie Pike (Boca Raton), finished second.
The Gators finished one, two, three in the women's 1,000-yard freestyle race. Distance free sophomore Katie Ball (Cinicinnati, Ohio) won the event, touching the wall in 10:02.50. Behind her, junior Jamie Tannhauser (Seattle, Wash.) took home second with a 10:08.15 effort. On the tail of the duo, sophomore Jamie Reid (Orlando) finished with 10:11.23 for a third-place showing.
Ashley Carusone (High Springs) finished in second place for UF with a 200-free time of 1:51.93. Teammate and true freshman Kim Larson (Longwood) was the next Gator to finish, her time of 1:53.30 was good for fourth place. Clocking 24.07 in the 50-freestyle was freshman Caroline Burckle (Louisville, Ky.) with a time of 24.07 to finish in second. Vanderbilt also swam the 50-free, taking fifth with a time of 24.39.
Notching first, second and third-place finishes again were the Florida Gators. In the 200 IM, Retrum clocked the swim in 2:02.57 for a 200 IM title and a NCAA provisional qualifying time. In spot two, senior transfer Katie McCann (Walpole, Mass.) finished with 2:04.92, just a half of a second ahead of senior Katie Kennedy (Ft. Myers) who clocked the IM in 2:05.56.
Packing away the 200 fly title, senior Harper finished the meet with a time of 2:00.48, a NCAA provisional time. Also making the provisional time and taking second, Retrum finished strong for UF with a fly time of 2:01.07. Senior Meredith Green (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was also in the fly, recording a 2:04.29 effort for the Gators, good for fourth place. Huff notched a second-place seat in the 100 free with a 52.32 showing for UF. Senior Christine Woodruff (Orlando) finished fourth in the 100 free, her time, 52.69.
First through fourth place was taken by Orange and Blue in the women's 200-yard backstroke. Farrell took the lead spot with a time of 1:58.66, a NCAA provisional qualifying time. In runner-up, McCann swam 2:03.41, while sophomore Kristen Harris (Holmdel, N.J.) nipped her heels with a 2:05.81 effort. Vanderbilt took the fourth spot for UF, touching the wall in 2:06.85.
Carusone took first place today in the 500-free. Her time of 4:56.97 was closely followed by freshman Pike, who took second with a time of 5:01.22. Reid came in fourth in the 500 free, clocking the race in 5:04.42. The Gators in the 200 breaststroke were exhibitioned, but clocked two of the best times in the meet. Kennedy finished with the best time of 2:19.42, while Huff took the second-best time of 2:19.71.
Swimming the 400-free relay in 3:26.68 was the team of Pike, McCann, Vanderbilt and Farrell, who took the best time in the event. Behind them, Healy, Ball, Green and Nicole Allfrey (Noblesville, Ind.) recorded a team clocking of 3:35.78. Finished the relay in 3:39.45 was the Florida 'A' team, which included Larson, Reid, Laurie Moreau (Largo) and Tannhauser.
UF defeated the Gamecocks for the fourth-year running and moves the history record to 14-0 against the Carolina University. Florida will return to the boards and pool on Tuesday, Nov. 16, as the team travels to Tallahassee to face Florida State at 5 pm.
