Ryan Lochte Breaks School Record; Gator Men Defeat Texas, South Carolina

The No. 4 University of Florida men's swimming and diving team defeated the fifth ranked Texas Longhorns and the South Carolina Gamecocks on Friday afternoon by scores of 126-103 and 144-87, at the Stephen C. O'Connell Center Natatorium.
The win over Texas marked Florida's first dual meet win over the Longhorns since the 94-95 season, while the win over the Gamecocks was the Gators' eighth in it's last 10 meetings.
With the victories the Gators improve to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Southeastern Conference. The perfect 5-0 start by the Gators is the best to-date under sixth-year Head Coach Gregg Troy and is the best overall dual meet start since the Gators opened the 1994-95 season with eight straight wins.
"We are happy with how the team is performing so far this season," Troy said. "They have trained hard and we are pleased with everyone's performances across the board."
The Gators jumped out to the early lead as the 400-yard medley relay team of Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.), Bill Mrazek (Tallahassee, Fla.), Adam Sioui (Ontario, Canada) and Nick Borecca (Honolulu, Hawaii) posted an NCAA provisional mark of 3:15.68, to take top honors in the event. In the opening leg of the relay, Lochte broke the school record for the 100-yard backstroke by recording a time of 46.72 seconds, eclipsing the old mark of 46.80 seconds.
In the very next event, the Gators swept the top-three overall places as the trio of Tobias Work (Falmouth, Mass.), Scott Kaufmann (Sparks, Nev.) and Albert Medrano (Sabadell, Spain) posted times of 9:12.81, 9:15.00 and 9:17.86 respectively.
In the 200-yard freestyle to tandem of Brian Hartley (Indianapolis, Ind.) and Sioui took second and third in the event overall in NCAA provisional times of 1:38.12 and 1:38.41.
The trio of Darian Townsend (Montrose, South Africa), Borreca and Daniel Penniman (Pensacola, Fla.) followed that with another Gator sweep of the top-three positions by recording times of 20.53, 20.83 and 20.85 seconds.
Lochte returned for the 200-yard individual medley with the duo of Robbie Fischetti (Richmond Va.) and Dustin McLarty (Deland, Fla.) to snag three of the top-four places. By claiming first-place in a time of 1:48.07, Lochte remained undefeated in the event on the season, while Fischetti and McLarty posted times of 1:53.01 and 1:53.41 to place third and fourth. Later Lochte would add the 500-yard freestyle title in a NCAA provisional time of 4:22.62.
Gator divers continue to perform well as they claimed third through fifth places in the one-meter springboard event. The team of Vitor Assuncao (Orlando, Fla.), Zach Wilcox (Yarrow Point, Wash.) and Justin Schmidt (Falcon, Colo.) posted scores of 305.70, 289.10 and 275.70.
In the 200-yard butterfly the duo of Sioui and Tim Hughes (Winter Park, Fla.) swept the top-two spots in times of 1:48.59 and 1:49.25.
Shaping up to be a team strength this season, the freshman sprint freestyle duo of Townsend and Penniman took first and third in the 100-yard freestyle with the former notching an NCAA provisional time.
Solidifying the victory for the Gators, the backstroke team of Kris Wiebeck (Tampa, Fla.) and Hartley claimed the top two spots in times of 1:46.87 and 1:47.24. Wiebeck's time placed him on the provisional qualifying list for the NCAA Championships later this season.
"I think we're headed in the right direction," Troy said. "We have a ways to go, but I have seen improvement throughout our lineup each time out."
The Gators return to action on Tuesday, Nov. 16, as they travel to Tallahassee to take on intrastate rival Florida State in dual meet action.
