Three Dutch Short Course Records Broken in Aachen

Nov 6, 2004

Results from the recent International Schwimm festival in Aachen, The Netherlands show that things could have been different in Indy at Short Course Worlds had the Dutch elected to field a team.

This was particularly true for Mark Veens, who swam on the silver medal-winning 400 free relay in Athens and swam times here in the 50 (21.67) and 100 (47.90) freestyles that would have garnered him bronze and gold, respectively, in Indy.

Marleen Veldhuis just keeps rolling along. In Aachen, she notched five wins, taking the 50 (24.88), 100 (53.90), and 200 (1:57.77) freestyles, as well as the 50 (26.48) butterfly. The latter of which would have been good enough for a bronze at Indy.

Hinklien Schreuder set two national records, first in the 50m backstroke with her time of 28.32, and another in the 100 IM, swimming a 1:02.10. For good measure, she also won the 200 IM (2:14.45) and 400 IM (4:49.56).

Dutch prospects in men's distance swimming have been few and far between in recent years, but those fortunes may change with Martijn van den Weijden, who set a national record in the 1500m free with his winning time of 15:05.30.
