Nine cities announced their intention to bid for the 13th FINA World Championships in 2009. The candidates are Athens (GRE), Budapest (HUN), Copenhagen (DEN), Dubai (UAE), Moscow (RUS), Paris (FRA), Rome (ITA), Stockholm (SWE) and Tokyo (JPN).

FINA will organise the first information meeting with the Cities/National Federations in Lausanne (SUI) on November 18, 2004.

The FINA Bureau will award the organisation of these championships during its meeting on July 16, 2005 with the occasion of the 11th FINA World Championships (July 17-31) in Montreal (CAN).

The 12th FINA World Championships will be organised in Melbourne (AUS) in 2007.
