UVA Women Defeat Miami in Season Opener

The Virginia women's swimming and diving team opened the dual meet season by winning 14 of 16 events in an Atlantic Coast Conference victory over Miami (October 22) at the UVa Aquatic and Fitness Center. This meet marked Miami's first conference dual meet as a member of the ACC. The Cavalier women (1-0, 1-0 ACC) posted a 151-125 win over Miami (1-1, 0-1 ACC). The Virginia men swam in the Blue/Orange Intrasquad meet.
The Virginia women opened the meet with a victory in the 400 medley relay. The team of third-year Brielle White (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside School), second-year Jenny Steiner (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence), first-year Stephanie Glover (Raleigh, N.C./Athens Drive), and first-year Jess Lewis (Allentown, Pa./Parkland) combined to swim a time of 3:47.62 to win the event. White also won both the 100 and 200 backstroke events for the Cavaliers. She touched first in the 100 backstroke, clocking a time of 57.15 and went on to take first place in the 200 backstroke (2:01.80). Glover came in second in the 100 back with a time of 58.43 and third-year Katie Gordon (Winter Park, Fla./Trinity Prep) came in second in the 200 backstroke (2:02.17). Gordon turned in the fastest time in the 400 individual medley, touching in at 4:20.12.
The Cavaliers swept the 1000 freestyle, led by third-year Rachael Burke (Bethesda, Md./Good Counsel). Burke clocked a time of 9:55.53, while fourth-years Katie McWilliams (Stratford, Conn./Bunnell) and Kate Wrenshall (Pittsburgh, Pa./Bolles School) came in second and third. Burke turned in the fastest time in the 500 freestyle, touching in an exhibition time of 4:56.71. She also came in third as a part of the Virginia's sweep of the 200 freestyle. Second-year Katy Bland (Raleigh, N.C./Leesville) won the 200 free (1:50.81) and second-year Rory Schmidt (Phoenix, Ariz./Arcadia) was in second.
Virginia took the top three spots in the 100 breaststroke, led by first-year Anna Steenrod (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin), who touched in a time of 1:04.74. Steiner came in second for the Cavaliers (1:05.78), and third-year Laura Mumper (Richmond, Va./Mills Godwin) finished third (1:09.23). Third-year Elaine Bennett (Richmond, Va./Douglas Freeman) won the 200 butterfly for Virginia in a time of 2:03.70. Wrenshall finished third in the 200 fly with a time of 2:08.40. Bennett also won the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:21.16. Steenrod turned in the second fastest time (2:21.27).
Lewis won a pair of individual events for the Cavaliers. She won the 50 freestyle, clocking a time of 23.86 to beat the rest of the field by over half of a second. Lewis went on to win the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.28. In third place for the Cavaliers in both the 50 and the 100 free events was first-year Amber Bialas (Virginia Beach, Va./Tallwood) with times of 24.55 and 53.37, respectively. Glover turned in the top time in the women's 100 butterfly, touching in at 56.36 to beat the rest of the field by over one second.
In the final event of the evening, the 400 freestyle relay, the Virginia team of Bland, Glover, Bialas, and Lewis joined forces to turn in the top time of 3:27.07.
Miami's Heather Bounds won both the one-meter and three-meter diving competitions, scoring 243.15 and 282.9 points, respectively.
In the men's Blue/Orange Intrasquad meet, second-year John Millen (Lilburn, Ga./Parkview) won both the 500 and 1000 free events. Fourth-year Michael Raab (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) won both the 200 freestyle and the 200 butterfly events for the Blue squad. In exhibition diving, Miami's Miguel Velazquez broke the AFC pool record in the three-meter event with a score of 399.45.
Virginia returns to action on Saturday, October 30 when both the men's and women's teams travel to State College, Pa. for a noon meet against Penn State.
