Tennesee Men Defeat Georgia Tech, 129-112

The Tennessee men's swimming and diving team topped Georgia Tech in its season opener here Thursday, 129-112 at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
Junior Casey Dauw, coming off an All-America season in 2003-04, finished first in the 400-yard individual medley in 3:57.24. His time broke the pool record set earlier this year by Alabama's Tim Hansen (3:57.82). Freshman Michael Wolfe finished fourth for the Vols in 4:12.18.
"This was an excellent early season win for the Vols today," UT head coach John Trembley said. "For Casey Dauw to break the pool record at an Olympic facility such as this is impressive."
Wolfe got his Volunteer career off to a winning start with a first-place finish in the 150-yard backstroke in 1:21.83. Following in a close second was teammate Brad Boswell in 1:24.02. Senior Josh Fulton was fifth in 1:24.21.
Junior Jason Thomas doubled-up in wins for the Vols with two impressive showings in the 1,650-yard freestyle (15.54.60) and the 500-yard free(4:36.34).
"I was very impressed with the first win from Michael Wolfe as a Vol in the 100 back," Trembley said. "Also, Jason Thomas swam well in his two wins."
Fulton and Brad Duryea provided leadership in the opening event of the afternoon for the Vols. Tennessee's 400-yard medley relay team of Fulton, Duryea, Kiel Huston and Andrew Engle finished first in 1:34.97.
By also finishing first in the 150-yard butterfly in 1:22.51, Engle brought home an individual win to go along with his efforts in the 400 medley relay.
Huston scored an individual victory in the 150-yard backstroke in 1:31.90 to go with his relay win in the 400 medley relay.
Juniors Tyler Gustafson and Bryan Goldberg finished one-two in the 150-yard freestyle in 1:11.95 and 1:14.87, respectively.
Gustafson added another win for Tennessee with 45.66 in the 100-yard freestyle. Dauw finished second in 46.84 with Goldberg fifth in 47.33.
The Vols' diving duo of senior Phillip Jones and freshman Ryan Rincon took the top-two spots on the 1-meter springboard. Jones scored 333.70 to Rincon's 273.22, while on the three-meter board, Rincon finished third with 300.30 and Jones was fourth with 299.25.
"I was particularly impressed with the leadership shown from Phillip Jones," Trembley said. "He led the team today."
The win puts the Vols' season-opening meet win streak at five, and 37 of their last 38 dual-meet season openers have been wins. The lone loss came in 2000 at Virginia by a 138-103 count.
The Big Orange returns home to face SEC rival Kentucky Oct. 29 at the UT Student Aquatic Center.
