ASU Sun Devils Split Wins Against UNLV

The Arizona State Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving team earned a split in the pool against UNLV on Friday in their dual meet opener at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center. The women (1-0) earned a 214-86 victory, while the men (0-1) fell 152.5 to 141.5.
The women were led by senior All-American Florencia Szigeti and freshman Caitlin Andrew who each had two individual and two relay wins apiece. The Sun Devil women started off the afternoon with a win in the 200 medley relay clocking a time of 1:45.07. They were led off by Andrew swimming the backstroke leg, followed by junior Heidi Schmidt in the breaststroke, junior Laura Ullrich in the butterfly and Szigeti finished up the relay with the freestyle leg.
ASU took charge of the women's freestyle events claiming first place in each event and the top two positions in 50, 100 and 200 events. Junior Erin Baldinger led the way in the 50 freestyle grabbing first place with a time of 24.08 while freshman Lindsey Brown took second (24.42). The 100 freestyle saw Szigeti claim her first individual first-place on the day clocking an NCAA consideration time of 51.00 with Brown grabbing another second place finish with the time of 52.45. The 200 event concluded with freshman Sarah A Fischer touching first (1:52.69) and junior Sandra Steffensen grabbing second place (1:53.51). Junior Kathryn Hennessy dominated the field by almost five seconds to take first in the 500 freestyle (5:01.46) while freshman Ellis Schieman earned her first collegiate victory with a time of 10:13.64 in the 1000 freestyle event.
In the diving pool, Senior All-American Trisha Tumlinson won both events for the Sun Devils scoring a 270.45 on the 1-meter event and 295.13 on the 3-meter. Sophomore Cassidy Farwell took second for the ladies in the 1-meter with a score of 244.35.
Szigeti hit the water next in the 100 backstroke and led the way for the Sun Devils grabbing first with a time of 57.84 while Andrew followed with her first individual first place in the 200 butterfly (2:03.86). The ladies again showed their dominance in the 100 butterfly taking the top-three slots with senior Sarah M Fischer taking first (57.29), junior Laura Ullrich took second (57.58) and Schieman rounded out the event finishing third (57.61). Senior Cara DeVinny had an impressive showing in the 400 IM claiming the victory with an effort of 4:23.73. The Sun Devil ladies rounded out the day with Szigeti, Andrew, Ullrich and Baldinger clocking a time of 1:35.43 in the 200 freestyle relay to take the win.
For the men, freshman Lucas Azevedo and junior All-American diver Joona Puhakka brought home two victories apiece. Azevedo started things off for the men with a victory in the 1000 freestyle (9:27.49) and followed up in the 500 freestyle touching the wall first with a time of 4:32.06.
In the diving pool for the men, Puhakka began his junior campaign where he left off last season as the reigning NCAA 3-meter champion claimed victory in both the 1-meter (300.83) and the 3-meter (283.83). Junior Brant Bingham claimed second behind Puhakka in both events scoring 273.45 on the 1-meter and 270.08 on the 3-meter.
Other individual first-place finishes for the Sun Devil men on the day included junior David Kolozar in the 200 freestyle clocking a time of 1:41.62, sophomore Leo Martins in the 200 breaststroke (2:04.73), and freshman CJ Nuess in the 400 IM with a time of 3:57.21.
The Sun Devils return to action again next weekend, October 29-30, as they travel to the Midwest where the women will face Purdue and Notre Dame on Friday followed by Indiana on Saturday, while the men take on Purdue both days.
