2004 World SC Championships - Day 5 Prelims Report

Oct 11, 2004  - Nikki Dryden

INDIANAPOLIS - It was a short session, with only 4 individual event heats. Tonight's program with 12 finals, will be intense, but this morning everyone was doing as little work as possible while still getting into the final.

Men's 200 Back
Aaron Peirsol (USA) set the tone by opting not to wear his cap in heats, but his long California surfer hair didn't slow him down. He had the fastest time of 1:53.80. Matt Welsh (AUS) had a solid swim of 1:54.42 to put him into tonight's final in lane 5. Also in was Bryce Hunt (USA) with his 1:55.26

Women's 200 Breast
Amanda Beard (USA) will be out for gold tonight, after finishing out of the medals in all four of her previous events. She won her head in 2:26.56, but it was Mirna Jukic (AUT) who had the fastest morning swim of 2:23.76 and Sarah Katsoulis (AUS) finished well in 2:24.12. Brooke Hanson (AUS) also looked strong with her heat win of 2:26.37 and will be going for her 6th gold of the championships.

Men's 200 Fly
With Michael Phelps out, Nikolay Skvortsov (RUS), will be the front runner with his 1:54.84 heat swim. But watch out for short course specialist James Hickman (GBR). He is the championship record holder in this event and put up a solid 1:55.11 this morning.

Women's 200 Free
Crowd favourite and local hero Lindsay Benko (USA) will have the fans going crazy tonight. She heads into the final in lane 5 after her 1:58.60 swim, but Lindsay is the world record holder in this event with a 1:54.04 so she certainly has the most room move in this event. She will battle it out with Josefin Lillihage (SWE) who had the fastest time of 1:58.07 and Dana Vollmer (USA) who swam a 1:58.86.
