Texas Men's Swimming and Diving Defeats Indiana, 170-130

The University of Texas men's swimming and diving squad opened its 2004-05 dual-meet season in strong fashion, capturing 11 of 16 event titles and posting a 170-130 triumph over the Indiana Hoosiers on Friday, Oct. 8.

"It was a very earlier time of the season for a dual-meet and the guys responded very well," said Texas head coach Eddie Reese. "The guys didn't worry about times, they just focused on racing."

Texas' 400-yard freestyle relay squad of freshman Matthew McGinnis (Raleigh, N.C), sophomore Tyler O'Halloran (Boardman, Ohio), freshman Caleb McDermott (Canyon Lake, Texas) and sophomore Garrett Weber-Gale (Fox Point, Wis.) capped off the meet, posting a time of 3:03.03 to win the event.

Competing in the first event of the meet, Andrew Davidson (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.), Matt Molnar, (Auburn, Ala.) Daniel DiToro (Scottsdale, Ariz) and O'Halloran finished the 200-yard medley relay in 1:30.57 to claim first place. The Longhorns secured the third and final scoring spot in 1:31.84 with the squad of Danial Rohleder (Austin, Texas), Christian Schurr (Austin, Texas), David Kahn (Port Jefferson, N.Y.) and Austin McNally (McKinney, Texas).

In the 200-yard freestyle, McGinnis posted an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:38.25 to take first place. Texas stretched its lead to 45-29 with the top two spots in the 100-yard backstroke. Andrew Davidson finished in first with a 49.98, while Rohleder took second with a 50.07.

In the 200-yard butterfly, the Longhorns pushed their lead to 66-46 when Nathan O'Brien (Sammamish, Wash.) took the crown with a 1:49.68, while Indiana's Murph Halasz, finished in second with a 1:50.49. Texas finished in third and fifth when Ranier Kendrick (Birmingham, Ala.) took third with a 1:52.49 and Wade Kelley (Marietta, Ga.) ended up in fifth with a 1:53.24.

Going into the first diving break, Texas moved its lead to 78-53, in the 50-yard freestyle. Texas' O'Halloran out-swam Russell to the wall in 20.75. In third place, DiToro claimed three points for Texas with a 21.01.

On the diving front, Texas sophomore Matt Bisordi took sixth with a 270.07, while freshman Brian Smith wound up in seventh with a 258.37 in one-meter competition. Meanwhile, Texas' Bisordi and Smith took fifth and sixth with a 301.20 and 270.30, respectively, in the three-meter event.

Coming out of the diving break, O'Halloran claimed the 100-yard freestyle in 45.71, before the Longhorns moved its lead to 110-78, when O'Brien won the 200-yard backstroke in 1:50.15.

Texas pushed its lead to 122-85 when Schurr captured the individual crown in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:04.01. Swander garnered the runner-up spot just behind Schurr with a 2:04.04, while Lowe came in third with a time of 2:05.80
