Canadian Team Announced for Short Course Worlds

Sep 12, 2004

Canada has announced a team of 23 swimmers to contest October's World Short Course Swimming Championships in Indianapolis.

The well-balanced team is in a position to contend for medals after a dismal showing in Athens.

A medal threat any time he hits the pool, Olympic finalist Rick Say could provide some hardware in the 200 and 400 freestyles, as could young distance ace Brittany Reimer, who just missed medals at the 2003 World Championships in both the 400 and 800 freestyles.

Jessica Deglau's butterfly shoes have been filled admirably by Audrey Lacroix, who just returned from the British National Short Course Championships where she broke Canadian records in the 100 and 200 on her way to winning five gold medals.

In the women's breaststrokes, oldie-but-goodie Lisa Blackburn still keeps on ticking, as does World Championship medalist Lauren van Oosten.

Medley specialist Liz Warden is another bright spot for Team Canada and could contend for medals in the 200 and 400 IMs.

Men's breaststroker Mike Brown is also a medal possibility after finaling at the Olympic Games in the 200 and breaking the Canadian record three times.

The team is spearheaded by Jim Fowlie, who is also the current interim National Performance Director of Swimming Canada.
