2004 Olympic Games - Finals Day 4 Aug 17

Aug 17, 2004  - Nikki Dryden

KLOCHKOVA FIRST TO SWEEP BOTH IM'S AT CONSECUTIVE OLYMPICS PHELPS WINS TWO GOLDS TODAY

Klochkova wins 4th career Olympic gold and Phelps wins 2nd and 3rd gold in the 200 fly and 4x200 free relay. The USA took the lead in the medal race with 14 (5-5-4) to Australia's 8 (4-3-1).

Alexander Popov (RUS), the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Champ in the 100 free, will not be back to go for a third. He swam a 49.23, which was only good enough for 9th spot in the semi-finals of the men's 100 free. In 8th-Ian Thorpe. The top qualifier for tomorrow night's final was Roland Schoeman (RSA) who charged out in 22.66 to his feet and held on for a 48.39 to Pieter vd Hoogenband's (NED) 48.55.

Women's 200 Freestyle

It was anyone's race; defending world champ Alena Popchanka (BLR) didn't qualify for the final, Otylia Jedrzejczak (POL) didn't enter in order to swim the 200 fly instead and world record holder Franziska van Almsick (GER) was well off her best. At the 150 it was still up for grabs and Camelia Potec (ROM) took it. She had the fastest time of the field outside of van Almsick, and her position in lane 1 allowed her burst off the 150 wall to go unnoticed until it was too late. Potec took the gold in 1:58.03 to Federica Pellegrini's (ITA) 1:58.22. "I wanted a medal in these Olympics," said Camelia, "and I managed to win gold." Solenne Figues (FRA) moved up strongly at the end for the bronze in 1:58.45. "The French team is euphoric," said Figues. "The second very stimulating night."

Men's 200 Butterfly

From 1988 until Michael Phelps (USA) arrived on the swimming scene, any 200 fly under 1:56 was world class. Michael then redefined the limits of the event, taking it down to 1:53. Last summer he was body lengths ahead, this year he is still number one and is still great, but the field is closing fast. Phelps controlled the race and won in 1:54.04-a new Olympic record and just 11 1/100ths off his best. "That's great," said a tired Michael. "I was really hurting on the third lap. I knew the other guys were coming in strong, so I just hoped I could hit the wall first."

Indeed, closing fast for the silver was Takashi Yamamoto (JPN) who swam an Asian record of 1:54.56. "I was aiming at gold," said Takashi. "I have nothing to regret. This is the result I got after giving my best, so I think this is the best result with my skills right now." Steve Parry (GBR), who was 6th in this event in Sydney and 4th at last year's world champs, had a fabulous swim also to win the bronze. He pushed Michael hard on the 3rd 50 and almost pulled even with him, but the effort hurt him in the final 25 and Takashi was able to pass him. Steve's time was 1:55.52 and you could feel his satisfaction. "I am absolutely made up," said Steve. "The Great Britain camp needed a medal and I'm happy to get it! I got up in 1988 when I was 11 years old to watch Andy Jameson (GBR) in the 100 fly and he won bronze too. I wanted to equal that."

Women's 200 Individual Medley

Yana Klochkova (UKR) is one of the most consistent female swimmers in the world. Her decisive win in the 200 IM tonight was Olympic gold medal number 4 for the 22-year old. Yana was slower than Sydney, but still fast enough to beat out Amanda Beard (USA) 2:11.14 to 2:11.70. Beard had a great swim, breaking Summer Sanders' American record, while Kirsty Coventry (ZIM) won another medal, this time bronze with a 2:12.72 and a new African record.

Men's 800 Freestyle Relay Michael Phelps (USA) came one step closer to winning 6 golds by leading out his team in the men's 4x200 free relay against the favoured Australians. Phelps was joined by Ryan Lochte, Peter Vanderkaay, and Klete Keller, who held off a fast charging Ian Thorpe, and anchored the gold for the USA in a new American record of 7:07.33 to Australia's 7:07.46. The Italians had a great race for the bronze, while the Canadians were 5th. Thorpe had the fastest split of 1:44.18 followed by Keller's 1:45.73.
Semi-finals

In the semi-finals of the men's 200 breast it was 15-year old Daniel Gyurta (HUN) who stole the show qualifying first in 2:10.75, just out-touching Brendan Hansen (USA) at the wall who went a 2:10.81. Kosuke Kitajima (JPN) won the first seeded heat in 2:10.86. Qualifying in 6th spot with a new Canadian record was Mike Brown (CAN) who had a great back end to finish in 2:12.14.
