FINA World Cup 8 - Day 1

Feb 7, 2004  - Nick J Thierry - FINA Press Commission

RIO DE JANEIRO - Yana Klochkova (UKR) and Amanda Beard (USA) had the most exciting race on the finals of the 2004 FINA World Cup day 1 in the 200 individual medley.

Klochkova had to swim a fast time to move up in the points race where her 990 is only the third best performance in the four competitions she has competed. She is the number one individual medley swimmer in the sport and was racing Amanda Beard the long course world 200 breaststroke champion. It was a close race, with Klochkova taking the lead after the fly and back, Beard moving up on the breaststroke and coming close in the freestyle leg.

Splits
Klochkova 28.45 1:01.02 1:39.23 2:09.75
Beard 29.06 1:02.87 1:39.95 2:10.03

It was the top women's performance worth 991 points for Klochkova and 990 for Beard, not enough to move her up from third place in the performance category.

Amanda Beard won the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.53 earlier, and Klochkova added a win the 200 backstroke in 2:09.40.

Brazil won two golds, the first one from Flavia Delaroli in the 50 free in what was a close race between team mate Rebeca Gusmao in 24.87. Gusmao set a new South American record yesterday in the prelims with 24.81.

Camelia Potec (ROM) was a double winner, first in the 200 free in 1:55.81 over Johanna Sjoberg (SWE) with 1:56.47. Potec came from behind on the last 50 as Sjoberg went out in 56.51 to Potec's 57.22.

Potec then won the 800 free in 8:29.37, with teammate Simona Paduraru (ROM) in second with 8:38.97.

Jose Martin Meolans (ARG) won the 100 freestyle in 47.69 (22.42 split). It was the top men's performance but fell short of moving him up in the top performance category. He is currently in sixth position with a slightly faster 100 free time of 47.61 from Berlin during January.

George Bovell (TRI) was second in the 100 free in 48.81, and later won the 100 IM in 54.35, as Thiago Pereira (BRA) in second with 54.95 bettered the South American record.
