Irish Amateur Swimming Association Disbanded

Jan 28, 1999

The Irish Amateur Swimming Association has been disbanded after a stormy annual general meeting in Dublin last Sunday (Jan 24th).

A new body Swim Ireland has taken its place and its officers will be elected at a meeting on the 24th of April.

The IASA were accused of covering up recent sex scandals in Irish swimming involving Derry O'Rourke and George Gibney two former National Coaches and as a result they have been voted out of existance.

However the Irish minister for Sport Jim McDaid has yet to release government funds to Swim Ireland until he is satisfied that the body has its house in order.

Meanwhile 17 countries will be represented at the Leisureland International Meet in Galway in Ireland from the 26th to the 28th of Februray including 4 time Olympic relay gold medallist John Olsen.

Alexander Popov and Mark Foster have also been approached to swim in Galway.
