Gerhard Zandberg, 19, bettered two African records in winning the 50 back 25.63 and the 100 back in 55.73 at the week long South African Championships. He bettered his own previous bests.

12 swimmers reached the qualifying times for the 2003 World Championships next July.

Roland Schoeman, 22, won 50 free in 22.46, and the 50 fly in 23.75 (top performance) and the 100 fly in 53.50.

Ryk Neethling, 25, only contested the 50 free where he was second with 22.46, winning the 100 free in 49.52, after a 49.06 in the semi finals. Neethling did not compete in the 200-400-1500 free events where he holds African records.

These three and Lyndon Ferns time trialed a 4x50 free relay in 1:28.78 with the following splits: Ferns 22.88, Schoeman 21.35, Zandberg 22.54, and Neethling 22.01. The fastest known recorded time in the world, A time of 1:29.16 by a USA National Team in 1987 is known, but no this is not a recognized record event.

Brett Petersen won the 50-100 breaststroke in 28.46 and 1:02.74. Terence Parkin won the 200 breast in 2:14.70 and the 200-400 IM in 2:04.10 and 4:25.40.

The presence of two women swimmers from Belarus provided some good performances. Elena Popchenko won the 50 free in 25.84, and scratched from the final of the 100 free after a fast semi final time of 55.34. She also won the 200 free in 2:00.97. Hanna Scherba was second in the 50 free 26.32 but swam a best ever of 58.82 in the 100 fly, and won the 200 IM in 2:16.62..

Lauren Roets, 15 was the newcomer of the meet with a third in the 50 free in 26.35 and a win in the 100 free with 55.98.

Charlene Wittstock, 25, won the 50-100 back in 29.56 and 1:02.56 but was touched out in the 200 back by Melissa Corfe, 17, with 2:14.90 to 2:15.10. Corfe won the 400-800-1500 free.
