Mark Riley set a new 50m breaststroke record in last night's semi-finals, and swims from lane four in what will be a hotly contested one-lap sprint.

The race was a furious fight for the gold medal. Only a whisker separated the field at the start, but as they raced for the wall Riley, Crook and Rickard led the charge. Riley winning time was 28.39, slower than his semifinal time of 28.26, the Australian record.

Olympic relay bronze medallist and eight times winner of this event, Phil Rogers, finished fourth, just off the medal pace with a creditable 29.01.

In the women's 200 freestyle it was Petria Thomas in the lead for the first 100 (58.14), but Elka Graham (58.42) moved into the lead on the second half to win with a 1:58.96. She won the 400 free on Day 1.

"I think I'm a little bit more subdued because I haven't tapered," Graham said after the win. "Tonight was a big surprise. I was so happy with my 1:58.96."

Graham's training partner Kirsten Thomson was second in 2:00.91. Both swim at Sydney University.

Hunter club champion Justin Norris is in line for his third title in a row in the 200m butterfly, against Redcliffe-Lawnton's Joshua Krogh, Youth Olympic star Travis Nederpelt, and Waterworx Shane Fielding.

Norris got away well and settled down to his rhythm and length of stroke in the first lap, but it was Fielding who made a surge coming off the 50m turn to go to the lead through 100m by a full half second.

In the 200 fly, Shane Fielding had the early lead to th 100 (56.49) but faded to fourth at the finish. Justin Norris was (57.00) at the 100 and then moved well into the lead to win.

Norris the 2000 Olympic silver medallist went on to add his third national title in the event with 1:57.49.

Travis Nederpelt in second with 1:58.92 was the star in Janaury of the Olympic Youth competition.
