Three World Cup Records Fall on the First Day of World Cup 4

Dec 6, 2002  - Russell McKinnon

German Thomas Rupprath broke two of them in the 50m backstroke and Swede Emma Igelstrom gained the other in the 100m freestyle. But Australian multiple world and Olympic champion Grant Hackett was the big winner of the day with the highest points-scoring win, collecting 1019 with a superb swim in the 400m freestyle.

Rupprath, who broke the 50m backstroke at the German championships last Saturday, raced home in 23.53 in the heats and 23.49 in the final. He out-touched the person who held the record until last week, home town hero Matt Welsh, who came home in 23.78 in front of the 1200-strong crowd, the same number of people who attended the morning heats.

World record holder Hackett, sporting a beard, finished just 1.59 seconds behind his July world record. He said that shaving off his beard could have made a difference to his time but that he was doing some hard work and a world record wasn't his aim. Hackett had no peer, taking a half body length lead over the USA's Chad Carvin and stretching that to two and a half lengths at 200m. At the wall, he was five seconds clear of Carvin and 10 ahead of third placed Craig Stevens (AUS).

In the morning heats of the 400m freestyle, Australian Stephen Penfold was clearly leading his heat when he stopped at the 350m mark, two laps short of the target. This caused second-placed Jens Kuhlmann to temporarily halt his stroke while he watched the timekeepers. Kuhlmann restarted and Penfold did the same when he realised his mistake but it was too late for either to record a decent time. The mistake echoes a television advertisement for a bank in Australia, which has a swimmer seemingly winning the race and cheering loudly while the rest of the participants carry on.

Great Britain's Stephen Parry easily claimed the 200m butterfly final more than six seconds outside Rupprath's world mark and nearly three seconds ahead of Australian Justin Norris, the Commonwealth champion and Olympic bronze medallist. His time of 1:57.57 was a shade slower than countryman James Hickman's time in New York.

Olympic champion Pieter van den Hoogenband (NED) didn't disappoint in the 100m freestyle with an Australian all-comers' record and a personal best 47.20, just 0.46 behind Alexander Popov's world record. With Olympic rival Ian Thorpe watching from the pool deck, van den Hoogenband was 0.11 under world record pace after 50m but eased up to beat Russia's Denis Pimankov (48.45) and Brazil's Gustavo Borges (48.56).

Russian Roman Sloudnov stole the 50m breaststroke from lane one, heading off South Africa's Brett Peterson, the fastest qualifier. Robert van der Zant (AUS) used his superior breaststroke and freestyle to win the 100m individual medley in a relatively slow 55.45 from Josh Taylor (AUS) and Italian Olympic 200m individual medley champion Massimiliano Rosolino.

World record holder Igelstrom was the toast of the women's competition, nudging her 100m breaststroke mark with a come-from-behind last 25m burst to register 1:05.91, half a second behind her April mark set in Moscow. Triple Commonwealth Games gold medallist Leisel Jones (AUS) touched first going into the last length but Igelstrom's push off the wall was far superior. Brooke Hanson (AUS) was third.

Sweden's Therese Alshammar failed to emulate countrywoman Anna-Karin Kammerling's world record in the 50m butterfly, posting 26.38s. The London-based swimmer said she was happy with the time, going 0.59s faster than the morning heats.

The 100m freestyle promised much and produced plenty with Australia's Elke Graham mowing down 17-year-old Lisbeth Lenton (AUS), the fastest qualifier, in the final length. The USA's Lindsay Benko was third. World record holder Alshammar was fourth nearly three seconds behind her best.

China's Tianyi Zhang won the 400m individual medley from Australia's Commonwealth champion Jennifer Reilly. Zhang went nearly five seconds faster than the heats while Reilly went a fraction slower but made up more than five metres in the freestyle leg.

Great Britain 14-year-old Stephanie Proud bettered her best by more than a second to haul in early leader South African Charlene Wittstock in the 200m backstroke. At 2:08.00, Proud was more than a second ahead of Wittstock and Australian Kelly Tucker.

Kerri-Anne Payne (GBR) cruised home with the 800m freestyle in 8:23.58, ahead of the USA's Rachel Komisarz and Australian Belinda Wilson.
