FINA World Cup 1 - Day 1 Backstroke Reswim
Nov 17, 2002 - Nick J. Thierry - Swimnews / FINA Press Commission
Haley Cope (USA) was not happy to reswim an event in which she won the first time around. The circumstances were as follows. The starting device malfunctioned which affected some of the swimmers who were not sure that the race was underway. There was no way to recall the swimmers as the false start rope failed to fall.
The race was rescheduled for the conclusion of the afternoon prelims, which started at 5:30pm. The race took place after 8pm with few spectators remaining and it was a scortcher. Haley Cope just took off and had a huge lead at the turn increasing it towards the finish touching in 27.21. It was her best ever and the third fastest all-time. Two years ago she held the world record with a 27.25.
When asked how come, "I was mad at having to swim a second time."
