Stanford Men Defeat Arizona 192-106

STANFORD, Calif. - The top-ranked Stanford men's swimming team defeated No. 9 Arizona, 192-106, this afternoon in a dual meet held at the Avery Aquatic Complex on the campus of Stanford University.
The Cardinal improve to 5-0 on the year, 1-0 in the Pac-10 while the Wildcats drop to 3-2, 1-1 in league play.
Stanford kicked off the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay in a NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:28.89 (Dan Westcott, Michael Bruce, Bobby O'Bryan and Jeff Guyman). In the second event on the day, Cardinal Matt Sorlien turned in a solid performance in the 1000 freestyle, winning in a time of 9:07.91.
Cardinals' Markus Rogan (1:37.01) and John Waters (1:39.12) finished 1-2 respectively in the 200 free. Peter Marshall (47.27) and Randall Bal (47.58) took first and second in the 100y backstroke with NCAA qualifying times. Marshall's time of 47.27 broke the pool record held by Tate Blahnik (1999).
In the 100y breaststroke, Cardinal Michael Bruce placed first in a time of 54.83 while teammate Peter Lennox-King took second (57.18). Dan Westcott took first in the 200 butterfly in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:47.96. Arizona's Roland Schoeman set a new pool record with his time of 20.02 in the 50 freestyle and also picked up a win in the 100 freestyle (43.99).
Peter Marshall picked up his second victory on the afternoon with a win in the 200 backstroke (1:45.11) while Michael Bruce won the 200 breaststroke (1:58.00). Markus Rogan's time of 4:25.34 in the 500 freestyle earned him top honors and sophomore Bobby O'Bryan finished first in the 100 butterfly, clocking in at 49.28.
Sophomore Matt Sorlien also won the 400 IM (3:53.53) and the Cardinal relay team of Jeff Guyman, Randall Bal, Bobby O'Bryan and Peter Marshall set a new pool record with their time in the 200 freestyle relay (1:20.27) breaking the old record, held by California (1998) of 1:20.86.
Freshman diver Adam Peterson finished fourth in the three-meter event (304.73) and one-meter event (272.40) to lead the Stanford divers.
The Cardinal are next in action in a dual meet against No. 5 Arizona State, on Saturday, January 26 at 2 p.m. in Palo Alto, California.
