Alabama Swimming and Diving Split with Seminoles

Jan 26, 2002

Alabama's men made short work of the Florida State Seminoles in Tallahassee today, but for the Crimson Tide women, winning wasn't enough to secure the victory.

The men's meet came out in the Tide's favor, 160-138. Alabama's women won 10 of 16 events, but didn't have enough depth with some key athletes on injured reserved to pull out the win, falling 164-136.

"We had some great swims today on both sides of the ledger," Alabama head coach Don Wagner said. "There were some great races, but unfortunately on the women's side FSU's depth, today, carried them through. It's surprising to win a majority of the races and come out on the losing end of the meet, but that doesn't take away from the great job our ladies did today."

The Tide women were missing sophomore Catalina Casaru and junior Meghan Lynch. Casaru is out with the flu while Lynch broke her nose during practice last week and was not available for duty. Alabama's men climb to 3-1 on the season while the women fall to 2-2.

Senior Grant Jollands and freshman Chris Flamion got things going for the Tide with a one-two finish in the 1000 freestyle. Jollands posted a 9:35.39.

Freshman phenom Stefan Gherghel won three events against the Seminoles, taking first in the 100 and 200 butterflies and the 100 freestyle.

Sophomores James Willcox and Ben Worby along with freshman Franck Southon went one-two-three respectively in the 200 freestyle with Willcox turning in a 1:41.39 for the win. Willcox came back later in the meet and outraced FSU's Alan Ribeiro to win the 500 freestyle with a 4:37.62.

Junior Jordie Proffitt went 49.98 to win the 100 backstroke while Southon won the 200 backstroke with a 1:50.38. Proffitt finished second in the 200 backstroke.

Freshman diver Bira Barbosa, who joined the Tide for the Spring semester, posted a win in just his second meet for Alabama, taking the three-meter board with a 317.55.

For the women, it was the sophomore class leading the charge. Sophomore sensation Anne Poleska posted three wins on the day to pace the Tide. Poleska showed her versatility by winning the 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 400 IM.

Sophomore Michelle King was also a multiple-event winner, taking first in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly, posting a 57.72 and 56.39 respectively.

A trio of sophomores picked up a trio of wins against when Lane Bassham won the one-meter diving with 290.55 points, Ann Ross won the 200 backstroke with a 2:04.94 and sophomore Lisa Andersson won the 500 freestyle with a 4:59.56.

Freshman Irini Kosta won the 200 freestyle with a 1:51.68 while senior Marcy Warriner took top honors in the 100 breaststroke.

There's no rest for the Tide on this trip, both the men and women will face the Florida Gators on Saturday in Gainesville starting at 2 p.m. EST.
