UBC Wins Men's and Women's CanWest Conference Titles

Jan 21, 2002  - Jasen Pratt

EDMONTON - The 3rd and final night of the Canada West Conference Championship meet ended with Kristy Cameron and Brian Johns winning both of their events tonight.

Cameron won both of her races on the strength of her great finishes. In the women's 200 IM Kelly Doody, looking to avoid a repeat of last night's 400 IM where Doody was forced to mount a come-from-behind attack to chase down Carrie Burgoyne, took out the 200 very aggressively. Doody led the race for the 1st 175m only to be passed on the finish by Cameron, 2:17.56 to 2:18.26.

In the women's 200 breaststroke event Cameron and 1st year swimmer for Alberta, Annamay Pierse, battled it out stroke for stroke through the 1st 150m when Cameron once again showed her poise and experience schooling Ms. Pierse on the finer details of pacing and race strategy.

Cameron Pierse
35.96 35.80
39.00	1:14.96	39.34	1:15.14
39.58	1:54.54	39.48	1:54.62
37.70	2:33.24	39.65	2:34.27

The women's 200m butterfly was won by Jessica Deglau (UBC) in a casual 2:14.96. Rookie varsity swimmer, Elizabeth Collins (UBC), who also managed a 3rd place finish in an off event the 200 fly, then stood up 10 minutes later to win the 100 free in a personal best of 57.37.

The women's 100 backstroke event was one of the most exciting of the night as UBC swimmer Kelly Stefanyshyn and UofC 2nd year swimmer, Erin Gamel, fought side by side through the whole 100m. Stefanyshyn outpaced Gamel through the last 15m to win 1:01.31 (30.53-30.78 splits) to 1:01.47 (30.34-31.13 splits).

In another exciting race, Danielle Bell (UVIC), held off Angela Stanley (UBC) taking out the race and holding a stroke at 52.0 and higher the whole race to win 4:20.58 to 4:20.79.

The UBC women won the final event of the night, the 4x100 MR, in championship meet record time. The women beat their own previous record by almost a full second in 4:13.25.

Brian Johns once again dominated the men's side of the meet winning both the 200 IM and 200 breast. Johns (2:01.73) finished one-two with UBC teammate and brother Kevin Johns (2:07.34).

Brian Johns, finding himself in the unusual spot of 1st seed after the heats of the 200 breaststroke, let John Stamhuis (UVIC) and Brad Mori act as rabbits for the 1st 100m. Stamhuis (1:06.77) and Mori (1:06.50) had almost 2 seconds on Johns (1:08.44) at the 100 mark. Showing why 400 IM'ers are easily the best conditioned athletes in the sport, Johns came back hard on the last 100 to win 2:17.84 over Stamhuis at 2:18.73

The men's 200 fly was another race that promised a lot of excitement with Pelechytik (Uof R) qualifying 1st for the finals and Jacks, the winner of the 100m event qualifying in 2nd. Jacks led from the outset building up a lead of nearly 2 seconds by the 150m mark. A fast finishing Pelechytik could not find enough pool space to catch Jacks, despite finishing his last 50 in 30.8 seconds. Jacks won in 2:01.51 to Pelechytik's 2:02.50

Other winners include:
Brent Hayden (UBC), 100 free 50.59
Roland Bauhart (UBC), 100 back 57.38
Mark Johnston (UBC), 400 free 3:56.88
UBC, 4x100 MR 3:47.14
