U of Toronto Defeats Rival McMaster

In front of nearly 200 spectators, the home town U of T Blues easily defeated Conference and Provincial rival McMaster: 167-122 (women) and 181-107 (mens).

"It was agreat meet for this time of year", enthused U of T head coach Byron MacDonald. "The atmoshpere was fun and exciting. It helped to elevate our performances. Of course our team loves to battle McMaster so that played a large role in swimming fast."

The McMaster mens team has never defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues in Toronto and that streak was kept alive. Swimmers of the meet as chosen by the coaches were: Julie Gravelle (UT) for her 4:16.85/400free win that eclipsed olympian Joanne Malar's meet record. Peter Szaflarski was the mens U of T swimmer of the meet with his three individual wins in the 200free(1:53.1); 100free (51.82) and 400free (4:01.47). Along with a split of 50.6 on the final relay.

McMasters swimmers of the meet were Tim Sauve for his victory in the 50 back (27.82) as one of only two wins for his squad. The womens winner was Janet Cook for solid second place finishes in the 50fly,100fly and 100free (57.9).

Multi-event winners for Toronto were:

  • Jen Button-1:01.57(100fly); 28.75(50fly) and 2:14(200fly);
  • Iris Elliott- 57.73(100free), 26.97(50free), 2:04.28(200free)
  • Liz Warden also won three events-1:03.30(100back), 2:17.16(200IM), 2:17.85(200back) and led out the final relay in 57.9.
  • Rebecca Applebaum won all three breaststrokes: 36.23; 1:17.89, and 2:46.32
  • Nick Dargus won two flys : 57.53 and 26.13 and the 200IM (2:11.79)
  • Chris Keung swept the breaststrokes: 30.75, 1:05.94 and 2:25.62
