FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup 3 Cancelled

Jan 14, 2002

The 2002 Marathon Swimming World Cup No 3, in the Hernandarias-Parana river of Argentina has been cancelled.

The economic crisis is the main reason. With the recent economic crisis gripping Argentina and the 40% currency devaluation, organizers are unable to pay prize money in US dollars as stipulated in the FINA contract, signed on 27 Nov 2001. The recent withdrawal of any financial support from the host cities as well as the province has made it impossible for organizers to honour the contract.

It was orginally scheduled for February 10 and then re-scheduled for Feb 17th in the Santa Fe province of Argentina.

The status of two other Marathon Swimming World Cups in Argentina, one scheduled on Jan 26, the (55 km) Puerto Gaboto-Rosario swim and the Rio Coronda (57 km) swim scheduled for Feb 3 are not known at this time.
