Arizona Women Win, Wildcat Men Fall to Southern Methodist

TUCSON, Ariz. - The fourth-ranked Arizona women's swimming team continues its winning streak as they defeated the seventh-ranked women of Southern Methodist today 146-108. With this win the Cats move to 5-0 on the 2001-02 season. On the men's side of the event Arizona lost to SMU 134-128, making the men 3-1 on the season.

For the Arizona women junior Beth Botsford touched the wall first in three individual events, the 100y back (55.04), the 200y back (1:58.42) and the 100y fly (56.48). Botsford was also part of the first place 200y medley relay team which touched the wall at 1:42.83. Along with Botsford on the relay team was sophomore Jessica Wagner, and seniors Amy Bouta and Jenny Vanker.

On the men?s side of the meet sophomore Greg Owen and senior Roland Schoeman each won two events. Owen captured both of the breaststroke events. In the 100y breast he touched at 57.25 and in the 200y breast he touched at 2:03.94. Schoeman was victorious in the 50y (19.99) and the 100y (44.62) free.

The Wildcats men's and women's swimming and diving teams will travel to the San Francisco Bay Area next to take on the Stanford Cardinal and the California Golden Bears. Arizona will compete against Stanford on Fri., Jan. 25 and Cal on Sat., Jan. 26.
