Alabama Swimming and Diving Beats Georgia Tech

TUSCALOOSA, ALA - The Alabama swimming and diving teams closed out their 2001-02 home season with a pair of wins against Georgia Tech here in the Don Gambril Olympic Pool.

Alabama's women dominated Georgia Tech 179-103 while the men took the Yellow Jackets 168-129. The Crimson Tide men and women both go to 2-1 on the dual meet season.

Sophomore Catalina Casaru opened up the Tide's winning ways for the women with a 12 second win over the field and finished up the meet with a second and a half win in the 200 IM. Freshman Irini Kosta won the 200 freestyle by nearly a second.

Sophomore Michele King won the 100 backstroke while senior Marcy Warriner, in her last home meet of her career, came away with the top finish in the 100 breaststroke. Warriner also grabbed a second place finish in the 50 freestyle, coming in just behind sophomore Lisa Andersson. Andersson also won the 500 freestyle.

Alabama's diving contingent swept the top four spots off the one-meter board, with sophomore Lane Bassham leading the way, with a one-point win over junior Kat Bortenlanger. Bassham and Bortenlanger also went one-two respectively off the three-meter board.

Sophomore Ann Ross won the 200 backstroke by two seconds while her classmate Flavia Sugimori took top honors in the 200 breaststroke.

Freshman Spiros Bitsakis, who joined the Tide for the winter semester, won the 200 freestyle followed by sophomore Ben Worby.

Freshman Franck Southon won the 100 backstroke and the 200 IM while freshman Stefan Gherghel won both the 200 butterfly and 200 backstroke. Sophomore Michael Pigassou won the 50 and 100 freestyles. Bira Barbosa, who also joined the Tide at the semester, won the one meter board while freshman Stewart Smith won the three-meter board.
