Therese Alshammar Decides to Train in Loughborough

Jan 10, 2002  - Anita Lonsbrough

Theresa Alshammar is now training with the University of Loughborough in Britain. Many will be surprised at this as the university currently only has a 25m four-lane pool.

The world record holder for the 50 and 100m freestyle short course will train in the sprint group under the guidance of Ben Titley. In the squad are British international's such as breaststroke specialist James Gibson, World team silver medallist Ros Brett, and British international Melanie Marshall. The overall responsibility lies with the Director of Swimming, Ian Armiger.

Alshammar, who has been without a coach since the Sydney Olympic Games where she won silver in both the 50 and 100m freestyle explains "I like Ben's enthusiasm for the sport and how willing he is to learn even more". Adding "I've missed having a coach but if I work with a coach it has to be something special and they must know more than I know. I think Ben and I will learn from each other and I will be looking to him to motivate me and push me in training."

The Swedish star will stay at Loughborough until July when she will go and compete in the European Championships. After the championships she will decide on her future plans.
