World Cup 5 - Final Report

Dec 9, 2001  - Russell McKinnon - FINA Press Commission

Melbourne, AUS - Classy performances came on the third and final night of the Telstra FINA World Cup swimming meet at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre here tonight.

Melbourne has been blessed with the fields in the 200m and 400m freestyle races here but the best swim tonight came in the 50m women's breaststroke with Great Britain's Zoe Baker producing a high-scoring sprint with 30.61 and just missing out on a world record set only last week in Shanghai, but bettering her own European record from October.

Multiple world record holder in breaststroke, Ed Moses (USA) broke a World Cup record in the 200m event with 2:07.59 while Aussie Geoff Huegill broke the World Cup record and just m ising the world mark (50.44) in the 100m butterfly with 50.71

It came as no surprise that Huegill and Baker were named the swimmers of the meet, collecting $A7000 each for their fine efforts. Huegill's prize came from his world-record 50m butterfly swim of last night.
