Dutch Nationals - Day 2 Report

Dec 9, 2001  - Oene Rusticus

One week before the European Championships, several contenders for medals in Antwerp showed their shape. It was Inge de Bruijn who attracted the most attention, but a lot of other high quality times were set also. Highlight this second day of the Dutch Nationals was the National record on the 50m backstroke, swum by Bastiaan Tamminga.

After a prelim time of 58.14, all eyes were focused on Inge de Bruijn, was she able to attack the European record held by Moravcova (57.16)? Not yet, her split of 27.30 led her to a decent 57.55. Nevertheless she was satisfied because of her good splits. Also just being back a week from heavy trainings in America, she still has to adapt a little bit to the Dutch way of life.

Backstroker Suze Valen finished just above her own National record on the 50m backstroke, her 28.55 is a good start for Antwerp next week. 17-years old Hinkelien Schreuder placed second on this event (28.95). Gold on the 200m breast was for PSV-swimmer Miranda Bosma, from start off, she led the field and swam to 2:32.67, a few meters before Jolijn van Valkengoed (2:34.09). Haike van Stralen, winner of the 400m freestyle, won also the 200m free convincing in 2:01.28.

Without IM specialists the retired Marcel Wouda and number two from the EYC in Dunkerque Georgios Dimitras who has joined the Greec Olympic team, Robin van Aggele was the only serious contender for the 400m IM. Miles ahead, the pro swimmer for Amsterdam ended in a decent 4:26.20 (1:00.69; 2:07.88; 3:25.45).

Flyer from the Plilips team Joris Keizer raced to 52.68 on the 100m fly after a spit of 24.67, just above the National record of Stefan Aartsen. But he wasn't satisfied about his time yet; he knows he has to go faster in Antwerp to be succesfull.

Olympic bronze medallist on the 4x200m freestyle relay Martijn Zuijdweg, proved to be on the right track again finishing first in 1:48.36 on the 200m free, after splits of 25.18, 52.77 and 1:20.71.

The 50m backstroke was a battle between Philips backstroke specialist Klaas Erik Zwering and sprinter Bastiaan Tamminga. Both men dived under the Dutch National recordtime. Tamminga proved everyone that he was indeed the right candidate for the backstroke spot in the medley relay in Antwerp, finishing first in 25.37. The 25.64 sure wasn't bad for Zwering who is just returning from an injury.
