Golden Gopher Swimmers Win Georgia Invitational

The seventh-ranked University of Minnesota men's swimming and diving team won the Georgia Invitational with 1,018.5 points, which concluded Sunday afternoon in Athens, Ga. The Golden Gophers easily outdistanced their Southeast Conference and Atlantic Coast Conference counterparts amassing 346 more points than second-place Alabama.

Minnesota's 400-yard freestyle relay of Matt Taylor, Allen Ong, Terry Silkaitis and Todd Smolinski won in 2:58.28, while All-American Justin Mortimer won the 1,650-yard freestyle in 15:16.78, ahead of teammate Ryan L'Roy (15:29.40).

The Golden Gophers also swept the top two spots of the 200-yard backstroke and 100-yard freestyle. Ben Bartell won the backstroke in 1:46.14, with Diego Urreta placing second in 1:46.44, while Ong (44.61) and Silkaitis (44.89) went 1-2 in the free.

All-American Jeff Hackler was also an individual claiming the 200-yard breaststroke crown in 1:59.16.
