Texas Continues to Roll After Day Two of Texas Invitational

AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Texas No. 2 men's and No. 6 women's swimming and diving teams both continued to roll on day two of competition at the 2001 Texas Invitational, on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin. The Texas men's team increased its leading point total to 436 points, distancing itself from No. 13 Arizona State, who stands in second with 373.5. Rounding out the top five on the men's side are No. 3 California (332.5), No. 8 Arizona (320) and No. 4 Southern California (300). The UT women sit atop its 13-team field with 506 points. They are followed by No. 1 Stanford (437), No. 5 Arizona (363), No. 11 Arizona State (333) and No. 7 California (287).

The UT men got the day two finals off to a hot start by opening with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay. Senior Tommy Hannan (Baltimore, Md.), sophomore Brendan Hansen (Havertown, Pa.), sophomore Ian Crocker (Portland, Maine) and senior Leffie Crawford (Pacifica, Calif.) touched in 1:27.69, just ahead of the Wisconsin 'A' squad in second (1:27.71). Both times are NCAA 'B' consideration marks.

Hansen continued to lead the pack, winning the 100 breaststroke in 53.57. The time was an automatic NCAA 'A' qualifying time and a new Texas Invitational meet record. Also tabbing an individual event victory for the UT men, junior Chris Kemp (Southlake, Texas) took top honors in the 200 free (1:36.02). Kemp's time was also an automatic NCAA 'A' cut.

On the women's side, the Texas quartet of freshman Kaela Humphries (Chaska, Minn.), junior Erin Phenix (Cinncinati, Ohio), junior Tanica Jamison (Dublin, Calif.) and senior-transfer Lauren Thies (Bend, Ore.) took charge in the 800 freestyle relay, winning in NCAA automatic qualifying time of 7:14.58.

In the 100 backstroke, California's Natalie Coughlin had an exceptional evening, winning the event in an American record time of 50.90. With the finish, Coughlin becomes the first American female swimmer to swim the 100 back in under 51 seconds. Coughlin also stole the show in the 200 free, posting a Texas Invitational and Jamail Swimming Center record time of 1:43.77.

In diving, the Longhorns were led on the one-meter board by senior Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.), who totaled 379.45 points to finish in first. On the women's three-meter board, sophomore Ally Hartzell (Austin, Texas) finished in second with 491.65 points.

The 2001 Texas Invitational will resume on Sunday, Dec. 2 with the preliminaries beginning at 9:30 a.m. Sunday's finals are slated for 3 p.m.
