World Cup 1 - Sloudnov and Sjoberg Top Performers

RIO DE JANEIRO - Finals of the second day got underway at 9:00am Sunday Nov 18. The weather was warm 25°c with a slight drizzle, which stopped after the first event. Water temperature in the pool was just under 27°c.

The top performance of the meet for Roman Sloudnov (RUS) win in the men's 100 breaststroke today with 58.76 (1000 points), a very fast time for what is early in the season. Sloudnov explained that he just started his program aiming to be at his bet next April at the time of the FINA SC Worlds in Moscow. It was close to his personal best of 58.51 from 2000. The current world record is 57.66. Sloudnov starts off the season impressively. He was second in the 50 breast yesterday with 27.32.

Oleg Lisogor (UKR) was the second best performer of the competition when he won the 50 breast yesterday in 27.22 (985). Today he was second in the 100 breast with 1:00.44.

Top women's performer was Johanna Sjoberg (SWE) winning today the 100 free with 54.88 and later the 50 fly in 26.68. Yesterday in winning the 100 fly in 58.29 (984) she earned the top women's performance of the meet. She also won the 50 free yesterday in 24.85. Her four individual wins were the most by anyone.

Yana Klochkova (UKR) won all the individual medleys with a 1:02.55 for the 100 today adding the 400 next. She also finished second in the 400 free. In the women's 400 individual medley Yana Klochkova easily won with Georgina Bardach (ARG) in second with her 4:41.09 bettered the former South American record of 4:46.16 from 1999.

The Americans won the most golds with 6 and had total medals of 11. Lindsay Benko was their top performer with wins in the 200 free and 200 back yesterday and a 400 free win with 4:07.84 over Klochkova by five seconds. Backstroker Diana MacManus added wins in the 50 and 100.

The quality of the competition was much superior to previous years.

The five-member Canadian team was solid with 9 medals (5-2-2) with Morgan Knabe winning the 200 breast yesterday in 2:09.50 his best ever adding a third in the 100 breast today with 1:00.52. Rhiannon Leier (CAN) won the 100 breast yesterday in 1:09.09 and added seconds today in the 50 and 200 breast. Strong performances from Rick Say (CAN) winning the 200 free in 1:45.84 yesterday and the 400 free in 3:45.55 and the 1500 free in 15:11.54. His 200 free was a personal best.

The South Africans had 12 medals (2-9-1) and two African records. Theo Verster won the 100 fly today in 53.54 and added a second in the 200 IM with 1:59.99. Terence Parkin was a second in the best race of the competition yesterday with 2:09.62 in the 200 breast, a third in the 200 IM today. Charlene Wittstock was second in the 100 back today with 1:00.83 adding second yesterday in the 50 and 200 back. Amanda Loots won the 200 fly today 2:11.88, had seconds in the 50 and 100 fly yesterday. African records were set by Wittstock (200 back) and Loots (100 fly).

Jirka Letzin (GER) won all three men's indvidual medley, like he did last year. Today he added the 200 IM with 1:59.03 to yesterday's 100 IM and 400 IM win. Germany had 8 total (4-3-1) medals, all from men.

Host Brazil had the most medals with 33 (4-10-19) and bettered six national and five South American records. A dozen or so performances also reached the standard required for the FINA World SC Championships team next April. Their four golds came from Rogerio Romero in the 200 back today with 1:56.16, Raphael De Thuin in the 50 fly yesterday with 23.84, Kaio de Almeida in the 20o fly with 1:57.43 and Nayara Ribeiro in the women's 800 free yesterday with 8:35.02.

Globo TV broadcasting live in Brazil had 12 million viewers during Sunday morning finals session from 9 to 11:15am
