COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland men's and women's swimming and diving teams continue to lead after two days of competition at the Terrapin Cup Invitational at the Campus Recreation Center Natatorium in College Park. Both Maryland teams combined to win the first six events of the night to take control of the invitational as the Terrapin women won six out of the final's eight events while the men won five of seven. The Maryland women's team is in first place with 1,014 points while the men's team has racked up 838 points to also place first after two days.

NC State ranks second on the women's side with 669 points while Illinois is in third with 573 points. James Madison and Old Dominion round out the field in fourth and fifth place with 280 and 215 points, respectively.

On the men's side, James Madison is in second place with 705 points while NC State is third with 648 points and Old Dominion is fourth with 284 points.

Maryland freshman Elizabeth Lavell (Annapolis, Md.) has been the story of the invitational after setting three school records in two days for the Terps. In the preliminaries, Lavell set a new school record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:19.12 before she shattered that mark in the finals, finishing in a time of 4:16.43. The time was also an NCAA "A" standard time for the freshman sensation from Annapolis. On the year, Lavell has rewritten the Maryland record books by setting three new school records. Lavell owns the best times in school history in the 400 IM to go along with the 200 IM and the 1000-free.

The Terps had three other individual event winners including junior Bridget Mallon (Arlington, Va.), who won the 100-fly in an NCAA "B" standard time of 55.01. Senior Kelly Bowman (Hauppauge, N.Y.) also swam an NCAA "B" standard by winning the 200-free in a time of 1:50.71 and freshman diver Rebecca Rudolph (Marietta, Ga.) won the 3-meter dive (471.90).

Illinois had two individual winners on the night as Alison Czmarko won the 100-back (57.33) and Ilkay Dikmen won the 100-breast, with an NCAA "B" standard time of 1:03.20. Maryland's Jill Martin (Orlando, Fla.) also turned in an NCAA "B" standard time in the same event, finishing second with a time of 1:03.70.

On the men's side, seniors Michael Malchak (Columbia, Md.) and Thomas Ehrhardt (Aschaffenburg, Bavaria, Germany) each won an event to lead the Terrapins. Ehrhardt captured first-place honors in the 100-fly (49.39) while Malchak took first in the 400 IM (4:02.76). Freshman E.J. Amyot (Fairport, N.Y.) also got in the mix by winning the 100-breast in a time of 57.51 and fellow freshman Erik Weinberg (Phoenix, Md.) captured first in the 100-back (50.78).

James Madison's Jeremy Bergman ended the Terps' winning streak at six events by finishing first in the 200-free (1:41.06).
