Penn State Edges Iowa 123 - 116

Jan 30, 2000

Iowa City, Iowa - Penn State defeated its second Big Ten opponent in as many weeks Saturday afternoon with a 123-116 dual meet win over Iowa. The Lions depth was a major factor in allowing themselves to escape Iowa City with the seven-point win despite winning only three of nine individual swimming events.

Penn State's aforementioned depth was on display in the 50 freestyle as the Lions posted the event's top-four finishers led by winner Brian Hostetler (Chambersburg, Pa) who tallied a time of 20.62. The Lions also produced three of the top four finishers in the 200 backstroke, paced by second-place finisher John Retrum (Anderson, Ind.). Steve Hodgins (Homdel, N.J.) and Paul Monyok (West Mifflin, Pa.) finished one-two in the 500 freestyle.

Hodgins led the Lions with wins in both the 500 and 1000 freestyle. Steve Bohner (Lansdale, Pa.) totaled 291.95 points to capture the 1-meter diving event. The Lions' 400 medley relay comprised of Josh Weaver (York, Pa.), Matt Teeter (Gettysburg, Pa.), Eugene Botes (Glen Mills, Pa.) and Holden Comeau (Carlisle, Pa.) placed first with a time of 3:21.07.

The Lions return to action this weekend with back-to-back home meets this weekend. Penn State will face in-state foe Pittsburgh on Friday, Feb. 4 at 6:00 p.m. The team will wrap up the regular season against James Madison on Saturday Feb. 5 beginning at 3:00 p.m. A ceremony will precede Saturday's meet to honor this year's senior class.
