Feb 3, 2000

University of Kentucky swimmers Shaun Zitani and Melissa Olson were named the Southeastern Conference Men's and Women's Swimmers of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday.

Zitani, a junior from Port St. Lucie, Fla., was honored for the second consecutive week as the SEC's top male swimmer. Zitani won the 50- and 100-yard freestyles, leading the UK men's team (4-2) to a 162-151 victory over Cincinnati last Saturday. Zitani's time of 20.14 in the 50 freestyle was his fastest of the season and met the NCAA provisional time standard. He is undefeated in the 50 freestyle this season.

This is the third consecutive week that a member of the UK men's swimming and diving team was named the SEC Swimmer of the Week. Macon White won the award for the week of Jan. 10-16, while Zitani was honored last week.

Melissa Olson, a junior from Charleston, W. Va., was honored as the SEC Women's Swimmer of the Week, the first time a member of the UK women's team has won the award this season.

Olson met the NCAA provisional time standard in the 400 individual medley with a winning time of 4:18.70, as the women's squad (7-0) capped off an undefeated season with a 173-143 victory over Cincinnati. She also won the 200 I.M., while recording a second-place finish in the 100 backstroke. Her time in the 400 I.M. is the third fastest time recorded in the SEC this season. She owns the team's top time in five events this season.
