Rhode Island Men and Women Vermont

Nov 10, 2001

KINGSTON, R.I. - Freshman Jodi Tvietmoe broke a school record for the second time in three swim meets and junior Kate Hawley won three individual events Saturday as the Rhode Island women (1-2) routed visiting Vermont 173-120 for their first win of the year.

Tvietmoe won the 200-yard butterfly in 2 minutes 10.90 seconds, breaking the mark of 2:11.10 she set in her first collegiate meet against New Hampshire Oct. 26. That time eclipsed the 10-year-old record (2:11.26) set by Jennifer Roulon on Feb. 18, 1991, the oldest mark still on the books.

Tvietmoe also won the 500 free in 5:25.42 as the Rhode Island women took 11 of 16 events to gain their first victory after falling to Maine in the pivotal final race in their last outing Oct. 27.

Meanwhile Hawley won all three of her races -- the 1,000 free (11:01.88), 200 backstroke (2:16.36) and 200 breaststroke (2:35.22) - and senior Ashley Good won both diving events for the Rams.

On the mens side Junior Matt Benedict won the 50 freestyle and the 200 backstroke Saturday as the men (3-0) stayed unbeaten, equalling the win total of last year's 3-4 squad.

Benedict was the only swimmer to win two individual events as the Rams took 11 of 14 before handing the last two to outmanned Vermont (0-3). He swam the 50 free in 23.01 and the 200 backstroke in 2:08.36.

Freshman standout Ben Robinson, a Pennsyvlania state champion last season, stayed unbeaten in four freestyle races this year by taking the 1,000 free in an impressive 9:56.09. Later he finished an unofficial first in the 400 individual medley in one of the races conceded to Vermont.

The Rams also had wins from junior Sean Tucker in the 100 free, freshman Mike Cimino in the 200 free, junior Mike Capozzi in the 100 backstroke, freshman Matt Hartke in the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Matt Emmert in the 200 breast, junior Craig Keenan in the 200 butterfly and freshman Eric Schena in the 1-meter dive.

Capozzi, Hartke and Tucker opened the meet by winning the 200 medley relay, anchored by junior Nate Suida.
