A Third World Record For Inge De Bruijn

May 28, 2000

SHEFFIELD-Inge de Bruijn captured her third world record at the Speedo Super Final in Sheffield today, when she won the 100 buttertfly in an amazing 56.69, slicing over a second off the existing world mark of 57.88 by Jenny Thompson (USA) from last August.

The 26-year-old predicted before the meet that she had come to England to establish four world records. She is three down (50 fly and a tie for 50 free yesterday)-she'll be swimming the 100 freestyle tomorrow.

De Bruijn is coached by Jacco Verhaeren in the Netherlands, and Paul Bergen in the USA st Tualatin Hills SC in Oregon.

Verhaeren says the problem will now become holding her back so that she will produce her best in Sydney at the Olympic Games in September.
