Jun 8, 2000

Carmen Barnett of Markham Ontario, a nationally ranked butterflyer has received the President's Scholarship for excellence in academics and extra curricular activities at the University of Western Ontario.

The scholarship, valued at over $30,000 is awarded to only the top 11 students of the incoming first year class of 4,400. Carmen has aspirations to continue on into medicine, following in the footsteps of Commonwealth games butterflyer Dr. Pete Fowler, a graduate and swimming alumni from the University of Western Ontario.

Dr. Fowler is currently director of the Fowler-Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic, situated at UWO, and has a world renowned reputation as an orthopaedic surgeon.

Coach Glen Belfry is "extremely excited" that this calibre of student and swimmer has chosen to come to Western. "Carmen has the willingness to learn that is so critical for being successful in academics and swimming at a high level".

"She'll have a tremendous impact not only in our classrooms but in the swimming pool and she's excited about her upcoming student/athlete career. She'll give our swim program a tremendous leader in and out of the pool."
