After winning the 50 freestyle in 21.99 Alexander Popov (RUS) complained that the false start at the beginning of the race might have affected his concentration as he was ready for the record.
On June 16 in a special heat Popov lowered the 10 year old world record of 21.81 by Tom Jager (USA) to 21.64.

Roman Sludnov bettered the world record in the 100 breaststroke semi finals with 1:00.37 on June 15. He won the finals the next day in 1:00.52. This betters the former record of 1:00.60 by Fred deBurghgraeve (BEL) in the prelims of the Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
