US Swimming Offering A Million Dollar Distance Challenge
Oct 26, 2000
USA Swimming Executive Director, Chuck Wielgus last week in a speech at the 2000 United States Aquatic Sports Convention in Orlando made this offer to US swimmers and coaches.
USA Swimming will offer a $1M award to an American female swimmer who sets a new world record and wins the gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in the 800 meter freestyle, and a similar award to an American male swimmer who sets a new world record and wins the gold medal in the 1500 meter freestyle event. There will also be a $500,000 award to be divided among the coaches who help each of these athletes achieve that goal. This program will be funded through a hole-in-one type insurance policy and we expect this program to attract great interest and further promote our efforts to encourage aerobic-based distance training.
It certainly gives US swimmers something to aim for!
