More Delay In RSA; Timed Finals Ahead

Apr 17, 2013  - Craig Lord

The burst pipe that turned the water green at South Africa nationals and caused day 2 of action to be postponed is still being fixed, the meet at the Newton Park Swimming Pool in Port Elizabeth out off for a second day running.

In an attempt to curtail the challenge for those seeking berths at the World Championships in Barcelona this summer, organisers have switched the scheduled to timed finals only. Racing will resume tomorrow afternoon with a series of timed finals, while morning and evening timed finals are scheduled for Friday and Saturday, when the meet will conclude.

Given standards beyond the top eight in the country, the decision will not have a negative impact on those in line for action in Spain this summer.

Swimmers, meanwhile, are hanging around. Roland Schoeman ‏tweeted: "Day 3 of South African World Champ trials postponed again. Rest of the meet to be swum as times finals"… followed by a plug for his hotel: "bed is so comfortable & the food is so good. Getting me through this postponed swim meet".
