Tar Heels Whip Wolverines 207-163

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - In a battle between two teams tied for the #9 spot in the College Swimming Coaches Association of America rankings, the North Carolina Tar Heels defeated the UM Wolverines 207-163 Saturday afternoon at the Maurice J. Koury Natatorium. The Tar Heels improved to 2-1 in the season with the win over the Wolverines.

It was the third straight season in which Carolina has defeated the Wolverines in dual-meet competition. Carolina has an all-time record of 5-1 against UM. The win was UNC Head Coach Frank Comfort's 201st as the Tar Heels' head mentor.

Freshman Jessi Perruquet won the 200-yard freestyle event with a time of 1:48.37, earning her a place in the Carolina record books as the third fastest swimmer ever in the event. In an exciting 200-yard medley relay, the team of sophomores Christy Watkins and Janna Turner, senior Summer Mack and freshman anchor Jessi Perruquet edged the Wolverine team by .09 seconds, finishing with a winning time of 1:44.54.

Katie Hathaway won a trio of events for the Tar Heels, capturing the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events and the 400-yard individual medley.

UNC will return to action on Tuesday when the Tar Heels play host to the Duke Blue Devils at 5 p.m. at Koury Natatorium.
