Two More Catalan Golds For Costa

World s/c 400m free champion Melanie Costa claimed victories over 400m freestyle and 200m backstroke in front of a home crowd at the Catalan Open in Spain a day after a brace of victories got her first long-course test of 2013 underway. 

She clocked a solid early season 4:09.81 on freestyle, establishing a solid lead in 2:03.72 at the half-way mark before she ploughed on at a sharper pace than the rest of the final throughout the race. 

Costa was back in less than half an hour later to win the 200m backstroke in 2:14.08 and shared the podium with Hannah Miley once more. The British world s/c 400m medley champion from Garioch took second in the freestyle in 4:14.50, with Patricia Ortega third in 4:16.07, and then third in the backstroke on , 2:16.68, London-based Bulgarian Ekaterina Avramova on 2:15.62 in second.

Miley concluded her busy programme with a 4:44.18 victory in her best event, the 400m medley, closest to her Claudia Dasca, on 4:54.54, Castro third in 4:57.11.

Miley has a sibling to push her in training these days. Her younger bro, teenager Alastair, made a podium of his own, taking third in the 200m backstroke on 2:08.06, 0.01sec behind Jose Segura, with London's Charlie Boldison the clear winner on 2:04.99.

In other action, Victor Goicechea, of Sant Andreu, took the 400m free in 3:57.49 ahead of Sabadell's Marc Sanchez, on 3:58.15 before returning later to claim gold in the 400m medley in 4:32.57; Albert Puig, of Terrasa, took the 100m butterfly in 55.22; Judit Ignacio, of Sabadell, the women's 100m 'fly in 1:02.11, ahead of Ortega and Miley, on 1:03.39 and 1:04.46 respectively; Fernando Morillas, of Mataro, claimed the 100m breaststroke in 1:04.07; Marina Garcia the 100m breaststroke among women, in 1:09.48 (Miley back in for 4th in 1:12.87); Miguel Rando the 50m free in 23.51, 0.04sec ahead of Eloi Saumell; and Marta Gonzalez the women's free dash in 26.69.
